One of the most important decisions made by Pastor, Dr. C.A.W. Clark*, trustees, deacons and members was the courageous effort to organize a Child Care Ministry.  Their diligence in establishing the Child Care program provided hundreds of young children the opportunity to develop their skills under the supervision of Christian workers with a demonstrated commitment to Early Childhood Education.

The pastor appointed a Child Care Advisory Committee and named Dr. B.E. Dade, Chairman.  This committee realized that a Child Care Ministry would provide an important service in the South Dallas community for young families and their children.  Mrs. Willene Dade was appointed a resource person because of her knowledge and experience in Early Childhood Education.  She emphasized the need for adequate space, safety, sanitation, nutrition, and training for the staff  and provided leadership in purchasing furniture, educational toys, materials and playground equipment.  In 1952, the building program and staff were able to meet minimum standards for operation and Mrs. Dade assisted the Advisory Committee in securing the Operations permit from the City of Dallas.
Mrs. M.E. Edwards* was selected as Director and served from 1952-1962.  Having been a former public school teacher in Welder, Texas, Mrs. Edwards was aware of the needs of young children.  She organized, challenged and led the Church in establishing and operating the Child Care Center at its South Dallas Property, The Watson memorial Mission, located at 3126 Hatcher St.  Mrs. Verna Raven succeeded her serving as Director from 1962-1996.  In addition to managing the Center on Hatcher Street. Mrs. Raven also supervised the Church's Good Haven Child Care Program which was closed in 1996.  Under her administration, the Center received 501(c)3 status and began to receive USDA assistance for the Center's Food Services.  During her tenure the present building was erected in 1992 and is licensed to accommodate 100 children.  Following Mrs. Raven's retirement in 1996, Mrs Carolyn Madere served as Interim Director until Mrs. LaBelle Jones became Director, serving from 1996-2001.
 

The Center with its diverse clientele has served hundreds of children who have become contributing citizens of our city, state and nation.  Current children and grandchildren continue the legacy that their parents and grandparents have passed to them in attending and graduating from Good Street Baptist Church Child Care Program.
